Le Bugue

The thriving old town of Le Bugue is situated in South West France in the Dordogne region of Aquitaine between the towns of Sarlat & Perigueux. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times and lies on the  pretty Vézère river, near its confluence with the river Dordogne. The typical bustling French  Tuesday market provides the visitor with all the wonderful sights and smells one associates with life in France and is a spectacle in itself and only a two minute walk from the house. The town has all amenities including supermarket, butcher, pharmacies, banks, restaurants, newsagents and several boulangeries/patisseries, the best being a one minute walk from the house.

Le Bugue itself has some lovely old architecture and it is worth wandering around the back-streets and alleys to absorb the warm ambience of the town.  There are also several interesting caves on the edge of the town. The municipal swimming pool is open in the summer months, and there is a very active tennis club with both indoor and outdoor courts. There are a number of places where you can hire canoes and just float along either the river Vézère or the river Dordogne. The two rivers meet at the pretty village of Limeuil, 5 kms. away, and going out in a canoe is a very pleasant way to pass a few hours travelling through pretty countryside. In the summer months there is free live music around and about the town on many evenings, adding to the holiday atmosphere.

Local activities include canoeing, cycling, hiking, walking, water sports, adventure playgrounds for children, aquarium, golf, tennis, horse riding, hot air ballooning, go-karting, exploring grottos and caves, and even eating and drinking! Canoe & bike hire are readily available.

Le Bugue is conveniently placed to many well known towns and villages, some of which are named on the next page. The area is steeped in the history of early man, and several troglodyte caves close by allow you to understand how civilisation developed in this part of France. All the towns and villages have numerous marked walking paths meandering into the surrounding countryside which allow you to explore the many different aspects of this wonderful area.

You can follow the Dordogne and Vézère rivers and discover superb chateaux, or just breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the peaceful countryside. In the house we keep plenty of information for all sorts of activities and places to visit to cater for all tastes.

We live locally and are on hand for any help or advice needed. The house is non-smoking and regrettably pets are not allowed.
